RED TREE
The existing lilac tree was 90% dead, but it dominated the backyard visually. From the interior one felt its presence and the client was reluctant to remove it. Given that, I recreated the tree as a living sculpture by trimming branches. To deny the materiality of the tree, we painted it red to reference the Japanese maple in the neighbour's gardem.
When one is dealing with a small space of 16 x 16ft, it becomes necessary to create a definition in the space and the tree provided this perfectly. The red on black served as a counter punch within the garden.
